Why is My Webcam Not Working?

Before testing your webcam, understanding why it might not be functioning is helpful. A common issue is the camera's permission settings within your browser or the operating system.

Often, users inadvertently deny a website the ability to use their camera, resulting in performance issues. Follow the steps below to permit to access the camera.

Other reasons why your webcam might not be working:

  • Firewalls and corporate networks
  • Your browser blocking your camera inputs

How to Grant Your Browser Permission to Access the Camera?

Google Chrome

  • Go to the page that requires your permission to access your camera
  • A pop-up should appear near the navigation bar 
  • Click 'Allow'
  • Refresh the page to enable the camera on that site.

Here’s also how to give permission manually:

  • On the navigation bar click on the icon before the URL
  • Select 'Settings of websites'
  • You will be redirected to the support of Google select 'Camera' and choose 'Allow'

Safari

  1. In the Safari app on your Mac, choose Safari > Preferences, then click 'Websites'.
  2. Select 'Camera' on the left.
  3. To the right of the website name, find the Camera dropdown menu.
    Select one of the following:
  • Ask: Safari prompts you when a website requests to use the camera.
  • Deny: The website cannot access the camera.
  • Allow: The website can access the camera.

4. Close the preferences window to save the changes.
